Saarloius
The “secret capital” of Saarland
Although Saarlouis, with around 34,000 inhabitants, is significantly smaller than Saarbrücken, the sixth largest city in Saarland is still considered the secret capital of the state. This is certainly due to the beautiful old town and the many leisure activities.
Saarlouis' historic old town
The city of Saarlouis has French roots: King Louis XIV founded the city in 1680, which was subsequently expanded as a defensive bastion in the north of the French kingdom. The remains of the old defenses can still be visited today because they have been integrated into the cityscape: bars and restaurants have set up shop in the casemates and the ditches have been filled with water.
Joy of life on the Saar: Saarlouis has “Longest bar in the Saarland”
There are so many gastronomic offerings in the city's Great Market that Saarlouis is considered the “longest bar in Saarland”. What's special: Many bars have plenty of outdoor seating options, so it's nice to sit outside in summer. Numerous shopping opportunities also ensure that you don't get bored when visiting the city, which is only a 10-minute drive from the Hotel Mühlenthal.
